COMMITTEE 2023 - 2024

Leadership

Arthur Harrison

Chair

As a trainee assistant editor in 2016 I remember feeling the same anxiety many had felt when going out to find their next gig - how do I negotiate fairer deals for myself? What skills should I focus on? How much experience do I need to step up? I really wanted a form of guidance so that I could understand what was reasonable and fair in terms of expectations, both from myself and the companies I was working for. That’s when I first discovered BECTU. BECTU not only provides a network of support for post production and facilities workers but it also provides an active voice in improving working conditions for all of its members. That’s something I really wanted to be involved in which led to me joining up and being an active member.

Eleanor Adler

Secretary

I joined BECTU because we can only improve the challenges we face in our industry by working together. I would like to support our branch in highlighting issues for new entrants and finding ways we can support students who want to start out in Post Production.

Lily Boocock

Assistant Secretary

I am inspired by the works of the committee and I want to contribute towards shaping a new industry where our talents are celebrated, our commitment is valued and our well-being is prioritised. I chose to pursue my hobby as a career and through our alliance and shared passion for change we can ensure a positive working environment for ourselves and for future generations.

Communications

Toby Nutter

Communications Officer

I want to help others and so joining an organisiation like BECTU means I can be part of something bigger, helping many in my industry. I specifically want to help factual editors and assistants improve working conditions.

Lead Reps

Chris Travis

Factual Lead Rep

I joined BECTU to become part of a community working to improve both the working conditions and the quality of output in our industry. I think the inevitable race to the bottom of pay and conditions that comes without a strong voice for workers harms everyone when the quality suffers and the UK loses its global reputation as a place to make great film and television.

Louisa Hawkins

TV Drama Lead Rep

I joined BECTU because I feel it’s important to ensure that we get the best possible working conditions in this industry. I love my job, but the narrative that we should put our jobs above everything else in our lives is exhausting and unsustainable. I have seen a cultural shift over the past few years, with a lot of people recognising the importance of a work/life balance, but I also know that we need the power of collective bargaining and organisation to make lasting, meaningful change.

Equality and Diversity Lead Rep

I have joined the committee as I feel my experience over the last few years can help address ongoing issues within the industry.
There are many areas that still need improvement, including working hours, rates and consistency of pay, correct credits and diversity.
I’m hoping by being part of the union I can contribute to bringing long term solutions to these issues.

Reps

Christopher CF Chow BFE, Film & TV EditorDiversity RepI rejoined BECTU because I was impressed with the work The Rough Assembly has done in the past few years. Frustratingly the progress on diversity and inclusiveness within our industry remains slow. There is huge amount of work ahead of us and we can only make positive change if we do it together as a community.

Environment and Sustainability Rep

I joined BECTU because I believe in the community and wanted to be part of pushing for a fairer, more sustainable future in post - for ourselves and the planet. If we don’t talk as freelancers, then who is going to look out for us?

Paschalla Sharpe

Equality and Diversity Rep

I joined BECTU and the committee to help create a stronger, more sustainable industry for each of us. I’m excited to be part of a community that is striving to improve diversity, inclusiveness and access within post-production. I would love to support the branch in championing a healthier work-life balance for all and see our colleagues who juggle caring/parenting roles thrive.

Kallis Shamaris, ADR Supervisor, Dialogue & ADR EditorSound TV RepFor too long Post Sound professionals have accepted working conditions that wouldn’t be acceptable to many of our colleagues working onset or on location . With no contracts or terms & conditions we’re often expected to work excessively long hours and weekends . More and more of us are working from home , becoming even more isolated . After years of complaining amongst ourselves and nothing changing ,it’s time to get organised . We can never achieve anything on a one to one basis with an employer - we need the collective bargaining power of BECTU. It’s been amazing to see what the editors have achieved so far in our branch of BECTU . With Facilities and post supervisors adopting the sound post rate cards we’re starting to see some progress and I hope that we can further continue improving workers rights across the board whether you are working on a big movie or a modest TV show.

I joined BECTU because I've seen the great work The Rough Assembly has done. I want to be part of the team that helps newcomers understand the industry, and established members get a better and more balanced work life. I believe that strong unions can drastically improve the quality of work and life of their members, and that's why I want to help BECTU be as strong as possible.

Feel free to improve the bio if it's too short or doesn't make a lot of sense
